The 7 essential knots for bushcraft and the outdoors

You’ve probably heard more than once that paracord is one of the essential pieces of survival gear to carry with you on every trip. (if you haven’t already, read ”what is paracord? what is it for?”)

What usually goes unsaid is that you also need to know how to use paracord and how to make it genuinely useful.

  • A cord tied the wrong way can do real damage. Picture a tarp coming loose and falling on you in the middle of a storm, or losing something you’d lashed to the outside of your backpack.

There are thousands of different ways to tie paracord, but you don’t need to know them all. In our view there are 7 knots that are essential out in the woods, on a trek or while doing bushcraft, and we’ll go through them in detail in the two videos coming up.

the knots we’ll cover are these:

    • Bowline
    • Sheet bend (joining knots)
    • Alpine butterfly
    • Taut-line hitch
    • Prusik
    • Trucker’s hitch
    • Cow hitch
    • Clove hitch
